Heritage & Wellbeing:

A topic close to my heart is mental wellbeing and the importance of spreading awareness.
For my MA dissertation I have researched the impact of cultural heritage on individual’s health and wellbeing.
It is becoming increasingly apparent that we are facing a mental health crisis. Poor mental wellbeing is significantly impacting lives, communities and is a huge financial burden on the economy and the NHS.
Museums and Heritage sites are increasingly being seen as places to promote positive wellbeing. Specialised wellbeing events, e.g. Museum Yoga, Mindfulness Tours and Art Therapy, in addition to simply being in a heritage space are seen to have a positive impact on our wellbeing!
Taking advantage of the potential of heritage spaces, collections and activities to support health and wellbeing needs is more important now than ever before! In a time of economic anxiety and uncertainty, it is vital that vulnerable individuals and communities are supported.

Heritage cannot cure mental health issues, BUT it is equipped to promote positive mental wellbeing within society.

Have you ever experienced a boost in your wellbeing after a trip to a heritage site or event?
I will explore this topic more in a future post. Watch this space!
